Frost on the pipe

normally occurs downstream of the Regulator, especially when the ambient relative humidity is high. This is a common occurrence, because the liquid propane acts as a refrigerant. When LP goes through a large pressure change, it expands. Its temperature drops below freezing, even on hot days. This causes the air surrounding the pipe to cool to below its “dew point tempera- ture” (saturation tempera- ture), thus depositing and freezing moisture continually on the super- cooled pipe. Frost can also occur at any line restriction between the tank and Vaporizer. In fact, internal freezing of valves can occur at the bottom outlets of LP storage tanks if the liquid propane has a higher- than-usual water content and the Hand Valve is opened too quickly.

First-Stage Regulator (2449-00032)

A high-pressure vapor Regulator is mounted downstream of the Vaporizer coil. It provides safety-pressure regulation for the Primary Orifice. This Regulator is considered a step-down or “pounds-to-pounds” Regulator, and is capable of regulating from 250 psi [1 723.7 kPa] down to 10-20 psi [68.9 - 137.9 kPa].

This schedule-80 (extra-heavy) steel pipe coil, is designed to provide a pipe surface area adequate for the heat transfer needed to convert liquid propane to propane vapor. The coil is mounted a suitable distance downstream of the Burner to provide a desired heat transfer medium for the Vaporizer. No flame contacts the Vaporizer coils, only heated air. As the Burner requirement increases (or decreases), the air is heated more/ less producing more/less heat for vaporizing. Thus, an ideal balance of heat for vaporization is continually available after startup.
