Startup of Continuous Drying

In operation, the grain at the top of the Dryer will be wet, the grain at the bottom will be dry, and the remaining grain will be at various stages of moisture content. Startup conditions will vary primarily between: 1) dry grain initial fill followed by wet grain, and 2) an initial fill of wet grain only. General procedures will be discussed for each of these two startup methods, followed by specific step-by-step operating procedures.

Dry grain startup

Fill the Dryer completely with dry grain. Then operate the Unload system until the grain is just below the vertical sidewall of the Dryer. Top off the Dryer with wet grain. Enable the Load, Fan, Burner, and Unload. Start the Dryer.

• QUANTUM® Control – Set the Moisture Control to AUTOMATIC (moisture-based).
• SPECTRUM® Control – Select the appropriate plenum temperature and unload rate for the incoming moisture level. Sample the moisture content and adjust speed as required.

Wet Grain Start-up

Batch Method: Fill the Dryer with wet grain. In Manual mode enable the Load, Fan, and Burner. Select the appropriate plenum temperature for the incoming moisture level. Allow 6 minutes of drying per point of moisture to be removed at a plenum temperature of 210 degrees F [98.9 degrees C] for yellow corn. For higher or lower plenum temperatures reduce or increase the minutes per point respectively. Cool the grain if this is a Heat-and-Cool Dryer. Then operate the Unload system until the grain is just below the vertical sidewall of the Dryer. Follow the Dry Grain Startup instructions.

Recycle Method: Set the grain system to direct the grain from the Dryer to recycle to the wet grain bin. Fill the Dryer with wet grain. Enable the Load, Fan, Burner, and Unload. Start the Dryer.

• QUANTUM® Control – Set the Moisture Control to AUTOMATIC (moisture-based).
• SPECTRUM® Control – Select the appropriate plenum temperature and unload rate for the incoming moisture level. Sample the moisture content and adjust speed as required.

When desired moisture level is attained, direct grain from the Dryer to the dry grain bin.

Dryer Shutdown

1. HOLD-RESUME shutdown. Press the HOLD/RESUME button. The Dryer will continue to run for preset HOLD/RESUME time period with only the Fan and Pilot and if it is not resumed during that time period the QUANTUM® or SPECTRUM® transition to Cool Down mode and turns off the Pilot. After Cool Down, the QUANTUM® / SPECTRUM® will turn off the Fan.
2. Emergency shutdown. Press the STOP button on the Dryer Control Panel. This will immediately terminate all Dryer functions. The STOP button on the QUANTUM® and SPECTRUM® will perform the same function but can experience a slight delay.
3. End-of-season shutdown. Locate the fuel Shutoff Valve at the tank or meter. With the Dryer in MANUAL mode and the Burner running, close the Valve. Allow time for the flame to burn out. Cool the grain. Empty the Dryer. Disconnect power to the Dryer.
